About the Artist

Artist Statement

Stephanie (McDermaid) Maurer is a Seattle-based visual artist working in oil paint on canvas. Her early work employed a traditional/representational technique. Her current work portrays the colors and textures of life, including the human figure, portraiture, interiors, and landscapes.

Portraiture and Figurative Work

Her portraiture/figurative work uses representational painting as a starting point to explore the complexities of the human form. She is interested in the play of light and shadow on the human body and uses saturated colors to engage the viewer.

Landscape and Interior Work

In her textural landscape and interior paintings, she aims to bring the feeling of being in nature or at home to the canvas. Thickly applied paint creates shadows, giving shapes a life of their own.

Overall Themes

Her paintings invite viewers to consider what the world would look like without preconceptions about gender roles and how paint can represent life in various aspects. She aims to capture the vibrancy of life, including light on the human form, sunlight on snowy peaks, and reflections on the ocean's surface.

Influences

Masters, such as Monet, inspire her use of color in her painting palettes.
